About G W E N Y T H
How our lived environments can positively influence our health and wellbeing and the role that art and design plays in this - specifically colour and pattern - is an important backdrop to my practice. Special pieces for the home and other spaces we inhabit can bring feelings of joy, inspiration, harmony, focus, energy or calmness, through their specific colours, forms and patterns. I believe these pieces and our positive responses to them enhance our lived experiences and support our wellbeing.
As an artist and designer, I endeavour to do this through capturing what I see in nature's beauty, in plants' sculptural shapes and forms. I love being in nature and draw from life and my photos and use these drawings as a basis for my designs. Most often the plants I choose to draw have a special association or meaning to me. I enjoy incorporating painted elements into my designs with gouache or watercolour and making hand-printed motifs and textures. In preparation for printing on fabric, I digitally render my designs, adding further colour, pattern and other details.
I value the best in quality and ensure my footprint on the environment is minimal in all I do. All fabrics are made from luxurious natural fibres and printed and sewn in Australia, with non-toxic, solvent free and water based inks. Learn more here.
A bit more about me…
I live and work in Australia's capital city, Canberra. I majored in print media at Sydney College of the Arts, University of Sydney, including in the technical methods of lino and wood block printing. I was fortunate in my early career to be surrounded and inspired by beautiful fine art, working in galleries, design studios and in the fine art auction industry. Discovering textile design at the University of the Arts' Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design while living in London, led me back to the love of making art and eventually, to the psychology and science of colour and pattern.
